Survey of Knowledge on Hypertension among Elementary School Students

Abstract
This study was done to find out the knowledge on hypertension of 298 elementary school students from seoul city, they were students in grade 4.5 and 6 attending three elementary schools. The survey took for 34days from september 11 to october 15, 2002. The results of this study were as follows; First, The highest correct answer(79.8%) about knowledge on hypertension was "absolute low intake of food for control of obesity" followed by "hypertension means high blood pressure and a horrible disease" (73.6%). The lowest correct answer (25.2%) was "higher average sodium intake is associated with high blood pressure" Second, The rate of having breakfast was 69.0% of the total respondents. Having breakfast of male students was much higher than female students. 12.5% of the total respondents takes lower dietary sodium at meals. 58.1% of the total respondents reported exercise a day. Male students reported more exercise than female. Third, The most of students didn¡¯t receive health education on hypertension, however, 68.1% of the total respondents 1s willing to read any kind of health education materials, and also they are willing to convey the health news and materials to the parents. From the results of this study, it is to propose that the health education for healthylife style such as weight reduction, moderation of dietary sodium, exercise should be strengthend to raise the knowledge of high risk factors of hypertension In elementary school.
